WP7 – Water Turbines

The work package is devoted to the integration of the novel CAE technologies developed in WP2, WP3, WP4 into the design workflow for the MOTOR Product water turbines.

Objectives

  • To create parametric geometry models of Kaplan and Francis turbines using advanced geometric functionality from WP2
  • To create a multi-stage optimization tool for the design of hydraulic profiles of Kaplan and Francis turbines using the isogeometric analysis solvers from WP3 and the optimization technologies from WP4
  • To improve the utility quality of turbines, especially, better efficiency in a wide range of operating conditions, increased unit flow rate through a turbine, and reduced cavitation

Description of work

  • Task 7.1: Analysis-suitable NURBS surface models and volume parameterizations for tubular Kaplan and Francis turbines
  • Task 7.2: Strategies for creating initial turbine designs as starting point for the optimization loop
  • Task 7.3: Multi-stage shape optimization of hydraulic profiles of Kaplan and Francis turbines taking into account effects of turbulence and fluid-structure interaction
  • Task 7.4: Simulation-based verification of the optimized turbine profiles using established CFD software packages
  • Task 7.5: Measurement-based verification of the optimized turbine profiles using a functional models of selected water turbines
